JOCKEY PROTEST DELAYS ACTION

"THE  big betting handicap of the day was delayed by nearly 15 minutes at Deauville yesterday after participating jockeys failed to emerge from the weighing room as part of a

co-ordinated protest at changes made by France  Galop to travelling expenses .

 

"The daily Quinte contest has huge significance in terms of betting turnover in France and its delay would have ordinarily meant the race losing its high-profile slot on terrestrial television.

 

"As it was, TV channel France 3 had already committed to showing a delayed recording of the race because of its coverage of the World Athletics Championships in Moscow" .

NO NAY NEVER is as good as it gets for Ward

"Wesley Ward hailed No Nay Never's Deauville success as the highlight of his career, having agonised all day about whether to scratch his Norfolk Stakes winner on account of rain soaked ground.

 

"In a town that will be adorned from head to toe in the stars and stripes ten days from now for its annual American Film Festival, Ward's achievement deserves a name plaque on the famous Deauville beachfront alongside the likes of  Jack Nicholson and Woody Allen.  "It's as good as it gets, "  he said referencing Nicholson's movie, after No Nay Never had made virtually all under David Flores to defy the late challenges of Vorda and Rizeena."

 

""Royal Ascot was very special , " he added. "I've had some success over there but  everybody has been so kind coming over here.

 

"We're at the forefront of Americans coming over.  You guys come over to the States and win at the Breeders. Cup and a lot of Grade 1's. Now that I've done this in a couple of different countries I'm hoping that a couple of my buddies will come over and enjoy the racing in Europe. They don't have experience of what it is all about, but once they do and they have success, there'll be many more coming. "

 

"No Nay Never returned to a chaotic winner's enclosure to be greeted by his American part-owners from the Ice Wine Stable, as well as many of the major partners in Coolmore, who bought into the son of Scat Daddy after his Ascot success.

 

"Ward revealed that an emergency plan to supplement the colt for the Gimcrack Stakes at York next week had been seriously considered after an initial track walk had been interrupted by further rain,

 

"I wasn't worried by the rain , I was  horrified, " Ward admitted,  "I texted Mr Magnier's son MV this morning, saying I was thinking about a scratch. At  1.30pm Coolmore's Paul Shanahan asked me to walk it one more time. It still had some give to it but not enough to want to scratch. I'm  certainly glad I did walk it a second time.

 

"We considered waiting for York because the horse was doing fantastic, bucking and kicking, really ready to run. "
 

"Ward was reluctant to discuss future plans, saying everyone would discuss it once the horse had returned to the US this week..

"Michael Tabor summed up the achievement of Ward's shuttling operation in winning two of  Europe's premier juvenile races,  a double which will make No Nay Never very hard to catch as champion two-year-old.

He said: "You have to have the horse and a horse with the constitution at that. At Ascot his performance was something else and I dare say I've never ever spoken to a trainer that was so confident about winning a horserace. It's very difficult for trainers in their position and he obviously knows his business."

 

"Vorda lost her unbeaten record but little else in going down by a length.

"She's confirmed herself as the best two-year-old- in Europe, " said trainer Philippe Sogorb. "she  was beaten by a force of nature. She could go to Newmarket at the end of September {for the Cheveley Park Stakes}."

"Clive Brittain was also delighted with Rizeena, who looked likely to be left behind at halfway before storming home under Ryan Moore, just denying the Mick Channon-trained Jallota for third.

"She missed the break a little bit so we weren't where we wanted to be but she's run a cracking race, "  "Brittain said. "You come here, you meet the best and you run a good race, You've got to be happy. "    Yes, Yes,  Yes .... Wow

"NO NAY NEVER jumped to the top of this year's two-year-old rating with an impressive win in the Prix Morny.

 

"Marginally the best recent winner of Royal Ascot's Norfolk Stakes, Wesley Ward's colt impressed throughout at Deauville, travelling powerfully before seeing off  Vorda and Rizeena, winners of the Prix Robert Papin and Queen Mary respectively.

"A Racing Post Rating of 117 looks fully warranted and recognises a fine performance by the winner to concede weight and a beating to some talented fillies.

 

"Jallota (110) took his form to a new level in fourth, just ahead of Molecomb winner Brown Sugar (108), and the form of the race has a solid feel to it.

 

"Plans are unclear for No Nay Never but at this stage he is the stand- out contender for the Middle Park. (Turf) Should connections opt to stay at home he would have very strong claims in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Sprint if as effective on Santa Anita's dirt. "

 

"Vorda (110),  who appeared to have a little left at the line, looks a solid contender for next month's Cheveley Park,  where she could meet Rizeena (108) again.
