“Equally adamant  was the now –slicker, leaner Richard Hannon, who was able to tell a tale of woe and wonder after covering the 26.2 miles in 6hr 48m 22s.  “I feel terrible, my God I feel terrible ‘ he said. “I have blisters all over my feet.; I ran the first two miles with the sheikh, but that seemed like four days ago.

“I was okay until 12 miles, but then I started to get the first blister. At 17 miles it popped and after that I started dying.

“Further down the course I was sick from all the jelly babies, the kids had been giving me, but at 21 miles someone gave me a half pint of cider, which helped. To be fair, it’s great craic. “
“Redvers, who landed in Britain from Australia only at 6.30am on Saturday said he had endured “a horrible time, an unbelievably  horrible time. “ as, no doubt, did Andrew Balding, Robert Cowell, Charlie Hills and Olly Stevens.

“Stevens had been joint-favourite to finish first among the team of trainers but completed in a smidgeon over five hours. “I thought I was going well for the first 15 miles, but then I blew up and ended up literally walking the last 11 miles, even that was hard. “

“That’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done, “ said Sheikh Fahad, before treating his troops to dinner at The Dorchester hotel. “ I’m exhausted but I’m also elated  and very proud of all the team. But never again. “
