GRAHAM GREEN,  "CARSON REMEMBERS 'BATTLE OF NEWMARKET' 40 YEARS ON. "
Published in the Racing Post Saturday May 2, 2015 page 3.
“THIS weekend’s Guineas meeting marks the 40th anniversary of one of the sport’s darkest days when what newspapers labelled the ‘Battle of Newmarket’ threatened to prevent the Classics being run.

“The 1975 1,000 Guineas was marred by ugly scenes, with fighting between striking stable staff and racegoers sparked by Willie Carson being dragged off his horse by demonstrators  on the way to the start for the second race.

“Frustrated that trainers would not cede to the demands of an extra £1.75 a week, 600 grooms went on strike, with about 200 staging a sit-down protest on the Rowley mile after earlier attempts to prevent racegoers entering the track failed. ”

“Recalling the incident, Carson said yesterday:(Friday May 1, 2015) “I was riding a horse called Pericet, who was a coward, and got me into trouble. He wasn’t very brave with all the people about, he stuck his toes in, and I was pulled off. There was a lot of sympathy for the stable lads, certainly I was sympathetic, but when one of them whacked me with my own whip when I was on the ground I started seeing things differently. ”

“A group of jockeys including Lester Piggott, retaliated by charging at the strikers in an effort to break up the protest, while Carson remounted and headed for the stands.

“He continued: I told the people, ‘come on, if you want racing, get down there and get them shifted, ‘ and it was an amazing sight seeing everyone climbing over the rails and walking down to the stable lads – the public dispersed them.”

“Peace was eventually restored after police cleared the course, but a bulldozer was subsequently used to dig  craters in the track in a bid to get the 2,000 Guineas – run two days later as the meeting was then Thursday-Saturday- abandoned.

“The holes were refilled, but shortly before the race the protesters repeated the sit-down tactic on the course and the runners had to be taken out of the stalls and started by flag.

“The race, run more than 2o yards short of a mile because of the trench that had been dug, was notably for Bolkonski, partnered by Frankie Dettori’s father Gianfranco, providing Henry Cecil with a first British Classic, although Carson’s memories primarily concern his brush with the law.

“He said: “I was called into stewards’ room where the chief constable of Cambridgeshire said he should be arresting me for inciting a riot.

“Thankfully nothing came of that, he gave me a warning. But I still believe my going in front of the stands and talking to the public helped solve the problem. “

  • From the section Election 2015
  • "The Lib Dems say they would refuse to join a coalition with a party that did not agree to raise public sector pay.
Nick Clegg will say his party's policy, announced last month, would be a "red line" in post-election negotiations. "
  • Yes, yes, yes will amount to a considerable sum from way back in 1975.
  • The young politicians left to sort out the old politicians massive errors.

Pharoah fights hard to win Kentucky Derby

 By Nicholas Godfrey 11:45PM 2 MAY 2015
Report: USA, Saturday
Churchill Downs: Kentucky Derby (Grade 1) 1m2f, dirt, 3yo
"LET the Triple Crown talk begin. The favourite American Pharaoh (Bob Baffert/Victor Espinoza) overcame a determined rival in Firing Line to win the 141st Kentucky Derby in front of a record crowd of 170,513 at Churchill Downs on Saturday.
Despite going wide on both turns in the storied $2 million contest, the much touted son of Pioneerof The Nile was driven home to score by a length to give his trainer Bob Baffert his fourth winner of America's most celebrated race.
Baffert, also responsible for third-placed Dortmund, was equalling the mark of the legendary D Wayne Lukas, who suggested before the race that American Pharoah could be the horse to end a notorious Triple Crown drought dating back to Affirmed in 1978.
"We were ready to rumble," said Baffert, whose previous winners were Silver Charm (1997), Real Quiet (1998) and War Emblem (2002).
"I kept reading about how good the horse is and I kept thinking I just hope they're right!"
They certainly were. The first three horses home were in the front rank throughout, although it was American Pharoah's stablemate, the Santa Anita Derby victor Dortmund, who set a sensible even pace from his old rival Firing Line, representing former Newmarket-based trainer Simon Callaghan."
