“FRANKIE DETTORI will seek to round off one of the most memorable seasons in his illustrious career with Group 1 goldrush at the Breeders’ Cup at
Keenland, armed with a powerful book of
rides to baack up his challenge for the Turf on red-hot favourite Golden Horn.
“Dettori is set to partner the Richard Hannon market leader
Illuminate on Friday’s curtain-raiser card in Kentucky, and on Saturday he
could run riot with four of the five horses for which he is already booked
either favourite or second favourite .
“Speaking yesterday at St Cloud, where he was fourth on Cirrus
Des Aigles in the Prix Royal-Oak, Dettori
said: “ It’s the Breeders’ Cup and every race is hard to win,
but I’m going there with some good chances.
“I ride a couple for Wesley Ward – Undrafted in the Turf Sprint
and Judy The Beauty in the Filly and Mare Sprint. And then there is Miss France
in the Filly and Mare Turf , Mshawish in the Mile, and of course Golden Horn.”
“A year ago at Santa Anita Dettori struck on the Friday of the
meeting on the Ward –trained Hootenanny in the Juvenile Turf-his 11th
Breeders’ Cup winner- and he looks to have decent prospects of a similar fast
start when partnering Cheveley Park runner-up Illuminate in the Juvenile
Fillies’ Turf.
“Hannon, who’s filly is a best price 5-1, said: “Illuminate
looks like being one of the highest-rated in the race. I’m not confident she
will stay but she isn’t silly, she doesn’t tear off and she doesn’t pull. She
has the speed to hold her position and it should be easier going round two
bends.
“She might have just needed the run in the Cheveley Park and one
more run this year will do her no harm. I took Sky Lantern to America and it
did not ruin her chance of coming back and winning a Guineas. “
“At a best-price 4-7 for the Turf, Derby and Arc Winner Golden
Horn is the focal point of Dettori’s mounts on the glittering Saturday card,
with Undrafted – on whom Dettori landed the
Diamond Jubilee Stakes in June, one of his eight top-flight winners this
year – another market leader, at 4-1, in the Turf Sprint.
“With Keenland hosting the Breeders’ Cup for the first time in
the event’s 31-year history, most European jockeys will have scant experience of
the venue.
“Dettori is taking no chances and will get his eye in on Pow
Wow Pal and Come As You Are for Ward on Thursday’s card.
“Wesley has put me up on a couple that day, he confirmed. “I rode at Keenland 20 years ago it’s nice to
refresh the memory, I will go over on Tuesday and get in the zone.
“Yesterday, the 44 –year- old teamed up with Cirrus Des Aigles
for the first time-Royal-Oak ending in the gallant failure as the nine-year-old
failed to last home on [his first start
at an extended mile and seven furlongs.
“He ran well actually , he just didn’t get the last furlong
and a half, “said Dettori. “I got to within a neck of Thierry [Thulliez, riding
pacesetting Mille Et Mille, who finished third] and then his stamina gave out.
“But it was a privilege to ride him. He’s a legend and I can
say that I rode him. “
