four-year-olds and especially older horses to give you a measure of ability. Even if he ‘s only a handicapper he ties the
generations together. We had old Pontam, a good handicapper, to begin with and
we could tell from him how good horses like Baragoi and Averof were. Averof
could eat up Baragoi and Pontam and we could tell from that he was a high –class
horse. That kind of thing ties everything in. The older horses give you a
yardstick.
“This three- year pattern applies to everything – your staff - your
owners, the horses and even the jockey’s. You have to analyse each rider you
use, what you think is his best type of horse and hope you can get him for that
